To research public companies online including what they do, who their officers and head of HR are, and their recent financial and industry history, visit hoovers.com.

For web links to San Francisco Greater Bay Area job postings by individual company, where you can read about the company, the open position and apply online, visit BayAreaCareers.com. You can also post your résumé at this site to be searched by prospective employers/recruiters.

When directly applying for a job, you may decide that re-writing your résumé and/or creating a targeted cover letter are appropriate steps. You shouldn't need to change your résumé dramatically, however.

CareerBuilder.com is a mega-search site that searches 70+ sites including multiple local newspaper classifieds, DICE, USA Today, iVillage, MSN Careers, etc.) You can post your résumé at this site and request email notifications of jobs that match your criteria.

An excellent source of jobs that often aren't posted elsewhere (especially in the San Franciso Bay Area) is craigslist. The site is fully searchable and you can also post your résumé here (although it only stays up for a short time, so you will want to check back and re-post it every few weeks).

Two sites for executives that can be searched for opportunities as well as accept posted résumés: 6figurejobs.com and the Wall Street Journal's CareerJournal.com
