Content + Layout = Success

Too many individuals focus on the layout and graphic design of their résumé and only give passing attention to content. Their résumés may be the first to get noticed but when it comes time to winnow the final candidates, they are rejected or end up on the second-string.

"Why do they do this?"

Sometimes it is out of a mistaken belief that getting attention is all that matters, but usually it is because writing content is hard.

Writing content requires an objective evaluation of your career and then crafting that information into readable, concise text.

It requires knowing the right questions to ask, the right information to put down, and painting an accurate picture of yourself so that your future employer will recognize you when the two of you meet face-to-face.

By focusing on content first, you improve the chances that your résumé will make the final cut.

"What are these buzzwords everyone keeps talking about?"

Buzzwords are words that are specific to your industry that show you are an "insider." If you write about what you know, the words you need will naturally come out.

Avoid words and phrases you don't completely understand which set you up to being exposed in the interview. Sincerity and confidence in your ability to do the job will serve you best.

Use the words you would use on the job.
Those are YOUR buzzwords.

"What about layout?"

Layout is important, but is truly effective when it serves as a vehicle for your words. After you have your content, determine the best layout to accomplish highlighting your words, so that your information "leaps" out at the reader.

If the layout you are using limits your ability to communicate what you want to say, change the layout, not the message. There are no absolute rules about résumé layout.

Your résumé should be a document you are proud of!
